Good Bye Yall

Thank all of you who helped me try to get through this class. Thank you Mr. Sullivan and Dr. Strange. I hope you all have a great summer and please try to clean up your gulf coast if you can. It was a very great experience.

Final Blog for May 2nd

1.What I have learned in EDM 310...
I do use Skype, posting movies on youtube, using youtube, using itunes which i like doing now, Google Earth, and Twitter. I have learned how to blog. However, I am not a big fan of it; it does make finding out what is out there and telling how you feel about the different teaching processes. Skype makes my life easier. I can use it for personal use like talking to my friend in Iraq or I can use it for a professional stand point like finding out information in a more one on one way.
2. Not really.
3. No
4. Yes, the Sykpe with Ms. Kelly did really excite me. She had very insightful views. I loved her advice and her ways of teaching. Also, I liked doing our interviews as a Youtube video. The McNorton kids were amazing. It excited me to teach them how to step up and start a blog. And I loved hearing Marianne Lane's aunt opinions on technology in the classroom. She was a very sweet and intelligent woman.
5.Yes it was. This class was one of the hardest classes at south because of the work load and having to figure most of it out on our own. However, I do believe I have become less dependent on teachers and trying to figure things in all classes on my own.
6. NO
7. I do feel overworked. I think that if we used to class time to show something like a blog of the week and tried to come up with a good blog as a whole, I think I would have liked that. It would have made class time more sufficient.
8. I think that I am more technology literate due to this class. I do think that I need to learn more. I believe I am at a medium level.
9. Well I do want to be more technology literate. I have decided to change my major. So, I will try and find a way to use it in my new field.

Febuary 28, 2010 Blog Assignment

1.) Richard Miller: This is how we Dream
I like the fact that he stated how he is a writer and he is leader of a writing program over seas. Also, he has written a book. Then, he is going on to state the different types of technology being used. His own book has been printed on the web and how we can buy the text online instead of going out and buying it. Also, how he did a whole project without stepping into a library. It is amazing how now we can do a full research without the library because of all the online resources.

I when he says we need inspiring teachers. I do believe that. Even though we have technology available, children need teachers who motivate them. Also, we need them because we do not have all the technology needed to do what his dream is yet. He wants the future to be a bright one with all teachers humanities and sciences. Also, I do believe my students in the future will be able to write with the media.

2.) Wendy Drexler
This video reminded me of what we are doing and learning in our EDM 310 class. Also, I can understand why students need a teacher to teach them how to blog and comment properly. Teachers in this field show students what is appropriate for the web. Then, there is the research on the web, what is propaganda and what is the truth. In my case, that is the hardest thing to distinguish between.

Also, I like the fact that he uses most of what we have learned in our EDM class. He states how he uses google docs and scholar. He using it to help build on his PLN which is what we are learning how to do everyday. I like the fact he uses itunes U as a place to download podcasts on his ipod which I have been doing lately. It is a easy way to listen to useful information on the go.

3.) Michael Wesch: The Machine
The part that stood out to me in this video is when he commented on the fact that in the 1980's generation or the MTV generation has a short attention span, materialistic, narcissistic, and not easily impressed. Now that generation says that about our generation. I have that term used over and over again to describe the teenagers in my era. Also, he says how my generation is "generation me". I have to agree with him and his speech on the American Idol. How we are searching for identity and recognition. I do think we have found new ways to find our selves. Even though, we do it in public and on television.
I like how he mentions self awareness when doing videos online. He shows videos of takes people doing their first youtube video. They are nervous and jittery. He states that when we do the videos it runs through our head not only what other people will think about us but how we see ourselves in the future. I know I get nervous on camera too because when looking back, I might look stupid and ridiculous. I would hate that to happen to me. However, I hope that I get over this fear and start posting videos soon.

Febuary 21, 2010 Blog Assignment

1.) Dr. Alice Christie's Searching the Web
As a teacher, we should all learn how to use search engines to find different websites to get information from to help teach the class. How many times does a teacher use google to find information? Then, there is the question, "How much information is true?". Also, if the information is decent for children to see. From her site she shows you all the different websites and search engines that are appropriate for all different age groups.
I have learned how she puts different search engines in different categories.I decided to look through some of those websites. One of my favorites was Fact Monster, it was so much fun. It made learning interesting. Did you know that throwing rice at wedding symbolizes of fertility and long life? I love learning different traditions of different cultures as well. Also, the games on this site are pretty fun to play. Go check it out.

2.) Ipods in Instruction
Before reading this, I would have never believed it was possible. I do believe there is a lot of temptation with this new method of teaching. I mean I think it could be useful, but how many teenagers would be distracted? I listen to my Ipod religiously but it is only for my music. However, I could see how this method could be very useful for teaching.
The reason I believe it would be useful would be able to download notes for itunes. Also, if the teacher was using pdcasting, you could download that podcast to your ipod. It makes it easier than recording notes or writing them because the background noise on the recorder is terrible and writing notes is frustrating because you will always miss something the teacher has said. Also, with the ipod method, it would make it open to everyone in class; so if a child missed class, he or she would not have to miss the assignment or notes.

Febuary 7, 2010 Blog Assignment

1.) Podcasting with First Graders (Landwitches Blog)
Before this class, I thought podcasting was for entertainment purposes only. However, I have come to realize that podcasting can be a good education, too. But this seems fun and educational, these first graders read a book; acting out the characters in the book on podcast. I never thought about podcasting like that. It seemed like a great idea for the classroom. Not only does that seem fun to do, but they can listen to it over and over again, also.
Also, I read on the Landwitches Blog about how podcasting builds skills. It is amazing how much these children are learning though the web. Not only just the skills on how to use the new technology and media literacy, but basic communication skills, presentation skills, and writing skills. These children are learning the use of these skills and applying them already like they are doing podcast in the classroom and learning to use them as a group project.
2.) Bobby Brooks: Keeping them Engaged
I was listening to Bobby Brooks talking about using games to keep the children engaged in education. They were taking about this use of game show quizzes to test students. My teacher in high school did this too. We used to use her version jeopardy to study for tests. It is amazing that he mentions this. It was a really good education tool, I think also.
Then, there is teaching in 3-D. Basically, he saying that when teachers teach that should show what they are teaching instead of just saying it out loud. He uses a dart board as an example of this my stepping towards it until he reaches the bulls eye. This shows the children what that the dart is the objectives and the bulls eye is the target and we need to take steps before reaching the goal. I understand teaching in 3-D also. One of my English teachers would put us in groups and act out scenes from the newspaper to keep us involved with current news. He also mentions that it would be a good idea if we acted out the text we were reading would help keep the children engaged. I completely agree. Teaching as a lecture gets pretty boring and puts most children to sleep, but teaching were the class is involved, that sounds like fun.

January 31, 2010 Blog Assignment

1.) Media Literacy in the First Grade
Truly amazing to see this happening. First Graders who can not only access the internet but they can comment on blogs and help make podcast. I think that if we would have told people this 20 years ago, they would have never believe us. I was very proud of those students. They are accomplishing goals that many adults can not do. It is hard to believe that they are learning the same things I am learning as a sophomore in college. I honestly wonder what my students are going to be learning when I become a teacher.

2.) Here's What's Coming!
Oh that was eye opening. When you think of a one year old, you would think teething rings and play pins as a fun activity, not playing on an Iphone. All I can think is this child is going to be texting when he is two. If these children of the next generation are starting technology at such a young age. What could this mean for new teachers or experienced ones? This is teaching at a whole new level. Not one that just involves reading, writing, and arithmetic but one that has to includes the web. I know as a young adult and a college student, I depend on the internet. I needed it in high school to an extent but not in middle school or grade school. However, I do believe things are about to change dramatically. I mean first graders blogging. Babies playing on Iphones. I even heard that two year olds are starting to skype. If we do not prepare for the technology now, how would will be able to teach those who know more than

3.) Podcasts...
I was listening to the SmartBoard Lesson episode 1 about dim dim. I thought it was a little odd he decided to do a podcast during a coffee run but I guess that is okay. However, ordering coffee or not, he convinced me to download dim dim. I have skype now but I wanted to see how this new web caming experience goes. I really enjoy my skype, I talked to one of my friends over seas. Hopefully, this new one will be better. I also listened to Kidcast podcast, I listened to the parts of the some thoughts on video podcasting or vodcasting, I agree I do not like that term either. I prefer video podcasting. I also agree with the auto vs video. I think I would prefer auto for the safety level in the classroom. However, using sound and sight, teaching with two senses than just one does do for better teaching. Also, I do find video podcasting more entertaining than auto podcasting. So this question comes to me, the safety of the students or trying to keep the students attention?

January 25, 2010 Blog Assignment

1.) A Vision of Students Today by: Michael Wesch

His video really amazed me. It was really interesting because many of those same situations, I find my self doing. However, I can honestly say I do not use Facebook in class. Then again, if I have my laptop with me, I find my self wondering the web instead of paying attention to the assignment. I agree with the sleep issue. I am lucky if I get seven hours of sleep at night. I go to school and work almost everyday and on my off days, I usually am doing homework. A direct quote from the video, "I am a multitasker. I have to be." This really spoke to me because I feel like that all the time. I feel like I need to do six things at one time to finish a days work.

Also, how much in debt we will be in when we graduate and even, if you do not, the debt will still be there. In my mind, this rises the question, how much is your education worth and how much are you taking with you? Some of this video shocked me that only 26% of the reading required will be used in real life. However, it impresses me that we are helping students get jobs that don't even exist yet. So this is very hopeful to me that maybe I will have a job when I leave college.

To answer the question, do I believe technology alone will save us? No, not alone. I believe it will help. Yes, I would rather read a web page than a book. I would rather use Google than an Encyclopedia. However, its will power of a person or people to save us.

2.) It's not about the Technology by Kelly Hines

Her views on the 21st century teacher is on point in my opinion. She agrees that technology is an important factor in teaching in the 21st century. However, it is a tool, not the teacher. She goes on to say that it is steps that make the teacher. My favorite she uses is "Teachers must be Learners". I completely agree. How can you teach someone if you do not know where they are coming from or what experiences they have seen? I agree that teachers need to be open to new experiences in the classroom. Another point that appealed to me was "Teaching in the 21st century is going to be about working smarter and not harder". I like this quote. When teaching in the 21st century, its not about making the work harder; its about working with technology.

Also, she states that if we give teachers the technology and they are not willing to innovate, the schools have wasted money. I do agree. However, I think that technology is important for a teacher to learn willing or not. It is not the solution to the teaching but it is a new source that children are using. How are teachers going to be learners if they are not willing to learn what we use every day? In today's society, children are learning to use technology at a young age and teachers need to at least know what they are using and how they are using them. However, with that said, technology is not the teacher. A good teacher is not a computer. It is the person in front of the computer knowing their students and listening to them and teaching them.

3.) Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher? by Karl
Fisch

His views were very eye opening, maybe even a little harsh, but truthful for the most part. His first point was that "All educators must achieve a basic level of technological capability and those who are not should should be embarrassed, not proud." I understand this statement. I hear educators and just normal adults saying that they do not know how to use a computer. They are not proud, but its more that they are more nonchalant about it. That they could careless about being technologically literate. I am not sure if they are willing to learn or not. However, it is pretty upsetting that I know children who are teaching their parents and teachers how to use basic computer skills. I agree with him when he says that they have qualifications to do their jobs and there are some who are jeopardizing the education of children. Teachers need to be able to keep up with their students technologically.

This point is the main objective in my opinion, "If a teacher today is not technologically literate - and is unwilling to make the effort to learn more - it's equivalent to a teacher 30 years ago who didn't know how to read and write." A little harsh, but I think it is a fair statement to say. It is all about how you look at the underlining of the statement. He goes on to state his claim on it by justifying that at the beginning of the 20th century, it was acceptable for those who could not read and write but for those who could became more successful. However, at the end of the century, you have to know how to read and write to be successful in life. That is what is happening in our century. It is becoming really hard for those who do not know how to use a computer or other technical devises. Like Karl Fischbowl says,"How can we teach this to kids, how can we model it, if we aren’t literate ourselves?" I think this is the perfect statement in which all educators and future educators should think about.

4.)Social Media Count by Gary Hayes

This is really remarkable when you sit down and watch the seconds go by and to see all the people who are creating new social networking. From Iphone downloads to new Facebook users; this is showing the change in technology. Not just a change but an extreme change at a rate growing every second of everyday. Can you image what these numbers will be in one year or in a couple of years when we start teaching? It not something teachers should ignore. The new social net working is changing before our eyes every day. If we get behind now, when will teachers ever be able to catch up. I mean look there is even social avatars that we are texting now. We need to understand these technological advances now. I know I can not just watch this and not be a part of this social net working. I know I am a part of Facebook, I use Google, and I have a blog. But it isn't enough anymore.

January 17, 2010 Blog Assignment

1.)Did You Know? 3.0 by Karl Fisch was really one of the most interesting movies I have seen on YouTube in a long time. I had no idea that China was going to be an English speaking country or that India has more advance honors students than America has children! Those facts really surprise me. Also, about the way we use technology to meet people; I started to realize that I have met more people on the internet than I do in person. My favorite part of this movie was the question “what resources did we use before Google?” Then, I began to think how much I use Google a day or a week. I need Google, it is my homepage. It is amazing how these people came up with these questions that most people would never think about. However now, my mind is stuck on it.

2.)Mr. Winkle Wakes by Matthew Needleman was really funny its own way. To me personally, that is my grandpa. He acts just like that. He does not feel comfortable around technology like Mr. Winkle. We have advance in technology so much in the last 100 hundred years. I believe if we were to tell people then what we know now, they would laugh at us. We save people lives with machines. However, the classroom part makes sense. We have advanced in technology everywhere else but we still teach the same material the same way. Teachers lecture and student write on paper with pen or pencil. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with that but I do believe soon that will change.

3.)Schools kill creativity by Sir Ken Robinson was very impressive. It was very entertaining and educational. It shows us how schools and the home life start to ruin our creativity. One point that caught my attention was that he use dance as a way of creativity when most people comment sports and music. No offense to those who play an instrument or play a sport, but dance is not mentioned in school activity much where I live. However, I went to dance class and adults would tell me that I would never become a professional dancer. That dream of mine would never make me any money just like Ken Robinson said. My parents told me that I had to go to college, which I do not regret, and get a decent education. However, I do believe what Ken Robinson says that we start to lose the rest of our body and focus just on our head. I do believe that we need to start showing our children that we appreciate their talents instead of pushing those talents aside.

4.)Harness Your Student’s Digital Smarts by Vicki Davis was a little intriguing. I liked the way she taught her students. It was very different from anything I experienced in high school. Vickie Davis has found way to teach children but also, let those children teach her how to create an avatar. It is very unique to create a virtual character and communicate in a classroom with that avatar. Also, Vicki Davis takes another step and teaches the children to communicate with children all around the world with their avatar.
